Christmas Market in Germany with festive stalls

Germany’s Christmas markets are world-famous: twinkling lights, steaming mugs of Glühwein, and the irresistible scent of roasted almonds and spiced Lebkuchen filling the air. But for anyone with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity, navigating these festive markets can be tricky. Hidden gluten is everywhere, from sauces to baked treats, and the thought of cross-contamination can dim even the brightest holiday mood. So where to find Gluten-Free Christmas Markets?

Thankfully, a growing number of Christmas markets across Germany are embracing the gluten-free spirit, ensuring everyone can savor the season safely. Many traditional treats such as roasted chestnuts (Maronen), roasted almonds (Gebrannte Mandeln), candied fruits, popcorn, and some sweets are naturally gluten-free. However, it’s always important to ask vendors directly whether a product is gluten-free and prepared without risk of cross-contamination, as recipes and preparation methods can vary from stall to stall.
