Last updated: June 2021

Gluten-free in Breda? Yes, you’ll find great GF options in this city! There are over a hundred bars and restaurants (several of which serve traditional Dutch specialities), so this city is definitely worth a visit.

Breda is located in the South of the Netherlands and is the 9th largest city in the country. It features a wealth of historical buildings, beautiful parks and cultural attractions. The city even has ties with the Holy Roman Empire, William of Orange, and even King Charles II of England.

Gluten-free in Breda – Restaurants

Publieke Werken

Publieke Werken is a cosy, informal and spacious restaurant with a terrace.  They serve lunch, 3-course choice menu and à la carte dishes.

During our visit I tried the grilled 300-gram beef rib-eye which was served with arugula and Parmesan cheese. Instead of a truffle gravy I got herb butter. Also some fried grilled vegetables and potatoes (instead of fries) were served as a side.  The staff was very friendly and willing to find gluten-free alternatives.

You will find Publieke Werken on St. Annastraat nº12, Breda, The Netherlands.

In Kannen & Kruiken

IKEK is a coffee and lunchroom in Breda, the Netherlands. At In Kannen en Kruiken in Breda it is all about nature, good coffee and tasty food. The friendly vibe will make you feel right at home. In the front, you have small tables to sit which are perfect for a cosy lunch. Halfway through, right by the kitchen, there is a couch and pouf that is perfect for reading or working. The patio in the back of the restaurant is a lovely hang out spot during the warmer days.

Next to all-day-breakfast (yay) there are multiple lunch options as well as some bites and cakes. If you’re vegan or gluten intolerant the friendly staff is happy to point out their gluten-free options for you.

I tried the “Berries in the grass” pie from Sharp Sharp. This cake consists of a chocolate base with lemongrass topped with a strawberry / orange blossom curd layer and a blue / black currant fruit layer on top. In one word: YUMMY.

You will find In Kannen & Kruiken on Veemarktstraat nº45, Breda, The Netherlands.

Proeflokaal Bregje

At Proeflokaal Bregje you can eat deliciously, affordably and for a fixed price. Some dishes are completely gluten-free, others might have an element with gluten, but ask the staff by changing it into a gluten free option. A separate allergen menu is also available. Proeflokaal Bregje has multiple locations, read my review about Proeflokaal Bregje in Haastrecht here!

Ume

The Japanese restaurant Ume also has many gluten-free options, here you must mention in advance that you are eating gluten-free! Ume has a clear marked allergy list, so ask the staff for it. The staff was friendly and quick. Ume works with an all you can eat formula, where you can enjoy unlimited Japanese dishes for a fixed amount. Using a tablet, you can order in rounds.

Drinks

Inspire Coffee Company

If you are a coffee-love like me make sure to visit Inspire. At Inspire you can enjoy various coffees, fresh tea and fresh fruit juices. Besides there is a nice view on the Grote Markt. Inspire Coffee Company imports their own coffee beans and uses it as their House Blend coffee so that you can always enjoy the best quality coffee.

Next to delicious coffee they have a few gluten-free food options. I tried Lariekoek which is a cake made of dates, nuts, seeds, gluten-free oatmeal, cacao and coconut. Also the fresh juices and homemade ice teas are worth a try.

You will find Inspire Coffee Company on Veemarktstraat nº4, Breda, The Netherlands.

Eetwinkel kom d’r in

Eetwinkel kom d’r in is a cafeteria with lots of gluten-free snacks. The dream for everyone with celiac disease. The cafeteria also serves normal snacks (with gluten) but don’t be afraid of cross-contamination since all gluten-free snacks are prepared in separate kitchen with dedicated fryers. The daughter of the owner has celiac and therefore the cafeteria takes preparing safe gluten-free food very serious.

During our visit I tried a gluten-free beef croquette (rundvlees kroket), bami disk (bamischijf) an fries with mayo. My fave was definitely the croquette.

You will find Eetwinkel kom d’r in on Nieuwstraat nº126, GIlze, The Netherlands.

DISCLAIMER

I cannot guarantee that all restaurants and stores listed above are 100% free of gluten. Always check with the restaurant for cross-contamination and whether there is an understanding for celiac disease sufferers.
